Marie Glaser is director of the ETH Wohnforum – ETH CASE Centre for Research on Architecture, Society and the & Built Environment at the ETH Department of Architecture. She completed her studies in European cultural anthropology and Literature at Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität Munich, American University Washington D.C. and the Institute for Interdisciplinary Studies (IFF) at University of Vienna (Dr. phil. 2004). She is educated in inter- and transdisciplinary research methods and approaches. She was research assistant and lecturer at the Institut für Interdisziplinäre Forschung und Fortbildung at the University of Vienna (1998-2004), comparatively analyzing the different scientific cultures and practices of knowledge production in different disciplines. With the core research team of IFF, she created and developed the cross-disciplinary advanced studies program “Studium Integrale” at University of Vienna in cooperation with the City of Vienna, which sets focus on education in inter- and trans-sectoral collaboration and communication strategies e.g. in sustainable urban and neighborhood development. She was awardee of the Andrea-von-Braun-scholarship 2002–2004. Her research, publications and teaching at ETH is set at the interplay of built and lived space and focuses on social and cultural history of housing, social innovation in housing, issues of inequality and strategies towards inclusion in housing and urban life. She is Co-Founder of the ETH Affordable Housing Forum, an international network of researchers, architects, designers, planners and practitioners in the field of housing, and contributes regularly as housing expert to public boards and as jury member of architectural competitions. Her area of work at ETH Wohnforum – ETH CASE is situated at the interface of academia and the professional field with its diverse stakeholders (Swiss federal government; cities and communes; housing cooperatives; NGOs; private and institutional investors). It integrates the perspectives of everyday practices and uses in the analytical scope and works towards mid- and long-term solution strategies for current societal challenges in housing and urban space. Her research supports grounded theory approaches and participatory methods.
Recently she is PI of an international research project on “Geographies of Age” in collaboration with KTH Stockholm and SKUOR TU Vienna (2017-2020), exploring the access to housing and urban life of elderly in the three cities against their different political and economic backgrounds. Case studies of selected neighbourhoods and local dialogue workshops with citizens and city authorities aim to formulate age and health policy recommendations.
She is also the PI of the Swiss research team in the collaborative European joint project “Public Space in European Social Housing” (PUSH) financed by the HERA program of the European Commission (2019-2022). Together with colleagues from Denmark, Italy and Norway the group works on formal and informal sites of publicness as spaces of encounter, contestation and dialogue in public space in housing to generate learnings on social integration.
