University Assistant and Doctoral Candidate

Richard Pfeifer is a university assistant at the Research Department Urban Culture and Public Space and a PhD student at the Department of Sociology. He holds a Master’s and a Bachelor’s degree in Culture and Social Anthropology from the University of Vienna and is studying spatial planning at TU Wien as part of the doctoral programme. Through participation in an international master’s programme, he also studied and conducted research at the Université Lumière Lyon 2.

His research focuses on social inequality and the formation of (counter)publics in the European city. In the context of his dissertation, he is researching the interaction of housing governance and urban inequalities using the case of recent residential urban development in Brussels and Vienna, thus addressing institutional change in the “European City”.

He was previously project manager and junior researcher of the JPI project Syncity: Synergetic Cities for Europe and worked as a structural engineer in Graz.

He is co-editor of Transform- Urban governance in Action (2021).
