Professional career and research experience

Sybille Frank, Prof. Dr. phil., is Professor for Urban Sociology and Sociology of Space at TU Darmstadt in Germany. Previously, she has held the position as Junior Professor for Urban and Regional Sociology at the Institute for Sociology, Technische Universität Berlin. She held positions as research fellow at the Berlin Social Science Center (WZB), at UNESCO’s World Heritage Centre in Paris, and at the Technical University Darmstadt, where she finished her PhD in 2008. From 2008 to 2011, Frank worked as Research Associate (Post-Doc) in the TU Darmstadt’s Priority Research Field „Intrinsic Logic of Cities”; in 2011, she was awarded a guest professorship for Sociology of Space at the Goethe University Frankfurt. In 2014, Frank was visiting researcher at the “Urban Heritage” Research Cluster of the Priority Research Area “Critical Heritage Studies”, University of Gothenburg, as well as at the Berlin Social Science Center (WZB) with the “President’s Project Group” and the Research Unit “Cultural Sources of Newness”. Frank’s work focuses on urban studies, tourism and heritage studies, comparative city research, and on the sociology of space and place. Her dissertation on the formation of a post-Wall heritage industry at Berlin’s former Checkpoint Charlie won the interdisciplinary prize “Humanities International” in 2012.

Frank is Fellow Professor at the International DFG (German Research Agency) Post-Graduate Research School „Berlin – New York – Toronto: The World in the City – Metropolitanism and Globalization from the 19th century until today” and at the Post-Graduate Research School “Innovation Society Today: The Reflexive Production of Novelty”. She is member of several research committees of the International Sociological Association (ISA) and of the German Sociological Association (DGS), and a member of the Gesellschaft für Stadtgeschichte und Urbanisierungsforschung, the Association of Critical Heritage Studies (ACHS) and the Research Network on “Transnational Memory and Identity”, funded by the Council for European Studies.
