SKuOR 2013 Urban culture, public space, and knowledge – Education and difference

In February 2013 SKuOR started together with Prof. PhD Jeffrey Hou (University of Washington, Seattle, US) into the new annual issue ,Urban culture, public space, and knowledge – Education and difference‘. Together with the head of the centre Ass. Prof. Sabine Knierbein and the PhD candidate DI (Arch) Tihomir Viderman, as well as the external expert Lale Rodgarkia-Dara, Jeffrey Hou is involved in teaching as well as research activities in winter term 2013/14. This term SKuOR is offering a bachelors-project ‘An introduction to urban studies “My place – Their place – Our place” ‘ between urban studies and urban design/planning. The first part of the project will take place within the workshop ‘MY PLACE a public-space autobiography’ at the urbanize-festival. The teaching offer is broadend by a masters/PhD seminar ‘International urban studies revisited’ and a students’ self organized Excursion ‘Games as intercultural tools to mirror the production of a city’s space’. The courses at the Vienna University of Technology are adressing bachelor-, master and PhD-students of related disciplines like planning, architecture, geography, sociology, landscape architecture, cultural studies, etc. According to SKuOR’s premises the team is focusing on combining interdisciplinary perspectives and exploratory approaches on urban design, planning and studies. Archdiploma award 2013

“Urban Nomads. Building Shanghai: Working Migrants and the Construction Process” written by Ulrike Bronner and Clarissa Reikersdorfer has been awarded for the best theory based master thesis at the archdiploma 2013. Every two years Vienna UT’s best diploma theses from the Faculty of Architecture and Planning are exhibited, outstanding works in the fields of theory and design are awarded by a jury.
