Forschung

The Interdisciplinary Centre for Urban Culture and Public Space aims at a strategic consolidation of previous research efforts at the interface between International Urban Studies, Urban Design and Urban Planning.

The initial point of our studies is the lived space in which everyday life in cities unfolds in a diverse and ambivalent fashion.

We have a general interest in the critical analysis of the capitalist urban development in the 20th and 21st century. We ask how social change can be deciphered through the analysis of changing patterns of space, and relatedly, its social production. Furthermore our special focus lies on questions of Urban Culture and Public Space.

Research Activities

Our research activities focus on five scientific fields of action – urban culture, urban economy, urban ecology, urban society, and urban policy.

By rendering the city as connective level, we constantly bridge between civil society, technically-oriented disciplines and public institutions.

In these fields of action, we perform manifold transdisciplinary translational tasks between society, universities and science.

We rely on cultural, social and political theory to ground empirical research on cities and urbanization.
