Wien7_Neubau - Umbau am Neubau

2025 V&R eLibrary

Sabine Knierbein, Magdalena Vock

This book is the first comprehensive work on Vienna at the district level that systematically attempts to make urban development conceptually comprehensible. Using numerous case studies, it discusses the redistribution of public spaces and highlights the transformation of the existing city.

Vienna’s seventh district is considered ‘the’ urban laboratory of Vienna, yet there have been hardly any planning-related publications on this topic at the municipal level. This work closes this gap and makes a fundamental contribution to urban development in Vienna. All contributions share a high degree of relevance in the context of climate adaptation, participation and governance. The book presents a conceptual planning approach and is dedicated to a variety of methodological foundations of participation, which are discussed on the basis of pioneering projects. The contributions show that transformations in the existing city are possible and that the topic of spatial justice is not just a buzzword. Wien7_Neubau is aimed at planners, politicians and academics, but also at society as a whole.
