An alternative approach to top-down urban design processes: a participatory design game simulation on 100. yil neighbourhood

WORKSHOP – Role Play Game: Experiencing Collaborative Decision-Making Process in Urban Design

WHAT?

You are invited to a two-day workshop that will be held within the scope of an EU funded project entitled “An alternative approach to top-down urban design processes: a participatory design game simulation on 100. Yıl Neighborhood”.

This workshop explores collaborative decision making process through an actual context based urban design game in order to gain a deeper understanding for the future steps of participatory design continuum of the project.

WHY?

Do you wonder how urban spaces are being shaped by the decisions of different actors? Have you ever wanted to represent a Mayor, NGO or community member? Do you want to experience a participatory design game by role playing, brainstorming, advocating the ideas and thoughts on three dimensional models of the neighborhood?

Challenges of participatory decision-making process for our common spaces is at the core of this workshop. We aim to create a participatory platform where all actors actively share and advocate their own thoughts regarding the future of the neighborhood. Therefore, a common vision based on real problems are going to be manifested and design alternatives for the neighborhood are going to be generated by performing a design game.

WHO?

The event is organized by Middle East Technical University Faculty of Architecture, City and Regional Planning Department in partnership with TU Wien, Interdisciplinary Centre for Urban Culture and Public Space.

HOW?

Within the workshop, participants will experience the conflict resolution and negotiation process by taking and playing roles of different actors in an emancipatory environment as an alternative to top-down decision-making processes in urban design. The participants will have the opportunities to learn how urban spaces are being shaped in different contexts, and to experience a different design method, design game, where they perform different roles of actors, resolve the conflict within and negotiate towards a common benefit.
