Candidate lecture: City of Vienna Visiting Professorship 2015

Nikolai Roskamm:
Past, strife and the city. The invention of urban planning and theorizing urban peace/conflict

ecture

In the first part of my presentation I will focus on the birth of urbanism in the second half of 19th century as an academic discipline, as an own distinctive part of municipality and as a field with own laws and regulations. The discursive roots of this institutionalization were the contemporary debates in political sciences about the function of the state and the following shift from `Polizeistaat´ to welfare state. In the second part, I will give an outline to my ongoing research project `the unoccupied city´ and its post-foundational approach on urban theory.  In this research I confront political philosophy with the field of urbanism. In my contribution, I will consider particularly Ernesto Laclau’s antagonism theory and Henry Lefebvre’s concept of the city as the place of strife. Both can provide an access to the issue of theorizing urban peace/conflict. In the third part I will suggest a topic for an urban research student-workshop in Vienna.
