Please note that the guest professors require a min. of 80% of attendance during the core times of the course during the whole semestre as well as puntuality.
Goals of the course
The seminar is thought to provoke two different stimuli for spatial planning and architecture students as well as for students from other disciplines dealing with spatial implications of social change. The teaching team is going to offer introductions on theory on the public sphere which than shall be reconnected to discourses on public space. The aim of the course is to put into focus the important role of media institutions for the formation of public opinion, and to reconnect this finding to our acting on space, our influence on urban development.
The crucial issue that will be discussed during the seminar is the vinculation of media, medial production, democracy and finally, space. Furthermore, theoretical insights into media economy and medial strategies from the point of view of media and communication studies will be as well offered as basic papers on the attention paradigm and city branding to highlight as well the importance of spatial representation for media and of medial representation for spatially working disciplines.
Basic reading of selected papers and passages is essential for participation in the course.
